What is Aipan?
Aipan is a ritualistic folk art praticed in Kumaon region in Uttarakhand. During the ceremonies, special occupation or rituals, the Kumaoni women decorated their homes by drawing different patterns and cultural symbols. It is generally done on Brick Red colour cloth using white colour to paint.This art is also practiced in bengal and know by the name Alpona.
History of Aipan
Aipan art was founded during the reign of Chand dynasty in Almora, Uttarakhand. From Almora it slowly moved to Kumaon and flourished in the Kumaon region under Chand dynasty. The word Aipan comes from a Sanskrit word "lepana" which means plaster as intially it was done using a paste of rice flour on walls, at the entrance, in the puja room. The art has been passed down from mothers to their daughters and daughter-in-laws.
Washing Instructions- Wash in cold water using mild detergent.
